Something we don't really talk about

I'm going to admit something here that I haven't even admitted to my own husband. Since L's birth, I've had problems with incontinence. It usually strikes when I have to go, but am trying to hold it for as long as possible -- like when I'm out with all 3 kids and trying to figure out how to use the restroom and keep everyone safe is too overwhelming -- so I try to make it all the way home. Something that I could do in years past, but not every time these days!

I didn't realize that 1 out of 4 women experience some trouble with incontinence throughout their life! Even though it's common, 80% of women don't talk about it. Kimberly-Clark's Poise brand joined together with the Women's Health Foundation (WHF) to raise awareness about pelvic health and wellness.

They recently awarded their first-ever Poise Award to Linda Michaels of Portage, Indiana because her story of personal triumph over pelvic pain and bladder control issues - and her willingness to tell it - has inspired women and doctors alike to share their stories. Click here for Linda's story.

When Mom Central asked if I would be willing to blog about this topic, I admit my first thought was "umm, do I really want to do that?" But, the more I thought about it, and the more I learned by viewing the Poise website, I realized that I did want to blog about it! I read some good tips, and convinced myself to bring it up at my next ob-gyn appointment. If I can help another woman learn more about the issue, then all the better!

I've had some trouble with incontinence on and off through the years. Especially if I have a bad case of bronchitis and am coughing a whole lot. Currently, I'm not having any trouble - and I'm thinking it's because I no longer have a uterus or gallbladder - maybe there's more room in there or something. I also do my "Keegle" exercises when I remember. My oldest child, George, was 10# 12oz and 20 in. long and I had him vaginally. I knew then I had to keep the Keegles up!

  2. Yeah... I can identify. 6 babies in 10 years has definitely taken a toll on my poor bladder! LOL!

    Thanks for the links!
